Captain Phil Mickelson and his HyFlyers Golf Club will look to bounce back this week at LIV Golf Jeddah after a slow start to the 2024 season.
The team has shown flashes through two events, which included plenty of sub-par rounds from every team member, but the scores and days have not quite lined up to make big jumps on the leaderboard. But there is no panic in the team room due to the massive talents which reside in it.
"We feel the sense or urgency as a team to play well this week," Mickelson said. "We did not get off to the start the first two weeks that we expected. We put a lot of work in during the offseason. We had a bit of a training camp and had a lot of information thrown at us in areas to help us improve. I don't think we had enough time to work through that, get ready and be sharp. We came in a little overwhelmed and we've identified a lot of areas to work on."
Mickelson has rededicated himself to his on-course performances after an offseason of time-consuming responsibilities that come with running a team. Mickelson said he has found the proper balance now, and the results have been evident. The six-time major champion led his team with a T-30 finish in Las Vegas earlier this month, where he finished under par for the week and shot a stellar 3-under 67 in Round 2.
Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, the host venue for LIV Golf Jeddah, is known for being a true risk and reward layout, which makes Mickelson a must-watch featured player for his millions of fans around the world. Mickelson has seen success at this layout. He shot a final-round 67 to finish tied for third at the 2020 PIF Saudi International.
"We're at a golf course where we've played before, so there's nothing new there," Mickelson said.
The usually reliable Camreron Tringale is starting to get it going in 2024 and has started fast in the opening two rounds of the first two events. But Tringale hasn’t quite put together the Sunday rounds that he wants. When that happens, Tringale will make big jumps on individual leaderboards.
Teammates Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree have had similar frustrations and are looking to right the ship at Jeddah.
