MICKELSON, HYFLYERS LOOK TO REBOUND IN VEGAS

No one is hitting the panic button on HyFlyers Golf Club. All it will take to get the bad taste out of the players’ mouths is a bounce-back showing in Las Vegas this week.

HyFlyers GC got off to a sluggish start in 2024 and entered Sunday tied for last on the team leaderboard. Captain Phil Mickelson kept the mood positive, reminded those around him that it’s a marathon, not a sprint and saw flashes of positives at Mayakoba. The team made a nice move up the team leaderboard to finish 10th, and got a nice contribution from Andy Ogletree, who was added to the roster in the offseason and is expected to produce at a high level as the season continues.

Cameron Tringale was stellar with under-par opening rounds of 69 and 70, and he backed it up with an even-par 71 on Sunday. Teammate Brendan Steele never quite found his footing on Friday and finished with a 4-over 75, but he made a huge comeback on Saturday with a stellar 5-under 66 in difficult and windy scoring conditions. He came back with a 1-under 70 on Sunday.

Mickelson had a counting score of 2-over 73 on Friday to get off to a nice start but stumbled a bit on Saturday with a 77 as most of the field struggled with scoring due to tough conditions. He improved on his Round 2 score on Sunday with a 3-over 74 and continued to provide plenty of highlights for his fans in the gallery.

Ogletree had a counting score of 72 in his first round with his new team, but like many others, battled the conditions on Saturday before finishing with a non-counting score of 79. On Sunday, Ogletree looked like the player Mickelson, Steel and Tringale targeted in the offseason. Ogletree shot a solid 1-under 70, a much-needed score considering all four scores now count in final rounds.

So, while it wasn’t exactly how the team wanted to start the season, turning the page quickly and finding their groove in Las Vegas will go a long way in the marathon.
